Special talk: Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (Layar) Workshop, taught by Markus Wust.
Augmented reality, once limited to the realm of science fiction, is now part of our everyday life. Thanks to an increasing number of advanced mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, it has become a tool not just for the promotion and delivery of commercial and entertainment products and services, but also for educational and research purposes. This presentation will provide an introduction to augmented reality and discuss current uses and possible future paths.

Workshop description:
In this workshop, participants will create a small augmented reality project of their choosing (e.g., tour of a historical site) for the Layar Augmented Reality Browser (http://www.layar.com). This project can then be viewed on any device capable of running Layar. If you want to actively participate in the workshop, you should sign up in advance for a free Layar developer account at https://www.layar.com/accounts/login/?next=/publishing/. This will allow you to publish "layers" i.e., collections of points that can be viewed in the browser.

Markus Wust is the Digital Collections and Preservation Librarian at North Carolina State University Libraries where he co-developed the Libraries’ first mobile web presence and was one of the collaborators on the WolfWalk project, a self-guided historical tour of the NC State campus for mobile devices.
